B2B vs. B2C Writing

B2B writing versus B2C writing is a complex matter, but here it will be attempted to simplify the matter as best as possible. B2B, or, business-to-business writing, is writing done in such a way that businesses are interested in other businesses to help them generate business overall. B2C writing, or business-to-consumer writing, is a business writing to the general public.

In both kinds of writing, as always, audience is very important. Knowing one’s audience, whatever the type of writing, will help immensely. In B2B writing, one is primarily concerned with the ability of one business to help out another business’s image. Therefore, B2B writing is highly stylistic and depends upon the ability, knowledge, and savvy of the writer, to wit, who is writing the copy for the B2B promotions.

B2C writing is very different because different strategies apply. Since a business is writing to a customer, it must be addressed with the idea in mind that a customer is being asked to consider choosing to do business with XYZ business. B2C copy must be completely clean, error-free, and appealing to customers if it is to be of any use to the business in question.

As you can see, writing for interaction between businesses is very different–if not entirely different–from writing from the standpoint of a business towards a customer. There is simply almost no comparison, as these are two highly stylized and different forms of writing.

Whatever type of writing one is doing, whether it be B2B or B2C, it is always important to keep the audience in mind and to not break that trust. Otherwise, the writing quality will come across as poor, and that would be unfortunate. Both types of writing have their own individual audiences.
